AI deceives Christians with Bible verses and explanations primarily through the generation of convincing but theologically flawed content. This content leverages the Bible’s authority to spread misinformation, often by misinterpreting Scripture, promoting unbiblical teachings, or creating deepfake religious media.
Methods of Deception
The deception occurs in several key ways:
1. Theological Inaccuracy and Distortion
AI models, especially large language models (LLMs), are trained on massive datasets that include both orthodox biblical scholarship and heterodox, secular, or even anti-biblical sources.
Confidently Wrong Explanations: The AI can generate plausible-sounding explanations for Bible verses that are, in fact, theologically incorrect or based on non-authoritative interpretations from false teachers or cults. Since the AI lacks true consciousness or spiritual discernment, it simply processes and outputs the most statistically probable combination of words, which may include subtle but dangerous errors.
Fabricating Verses or Concepts: In what is known as “hallucination,” AI can sometimes create non-existent Bible verses or references that sound authentic, leading people to believe in a Scripture that does not exist.
Cultural Bias: AI may subtly re-interpret biblical concepts to align with modern, secular, or cultural values, potentially undermining traditional, historical, or orthodox Christian teachings on morality, salvation, or doctrine.
2. Creating False Spiritual Authority (AI “Pastors”)
A major source of deception is the creation of AI personalities, such as virtual “AI pastors,” “AI Jesus” chatbots, or religious media companions.
Replacing the Holy Spirit and Human Mentors: These AI figures can be used as a primary source of spiritual guidance, effectively replacing the need for prayer, dedicated personal Bible study, the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, or counsel from trained human spiritual leaders. This substitution can lead to a shallow, personalized faith devoid of genuine relationship or accountability.
Generating a “Feel-Good” Gospel: Many AI chatbots are programmed to be “neutral” or to give universally pleasing answers. This can result in an “AI Jesus” that avoids confronting sin, does not mention the need for repentance, or offers a shallow message focused solely on comfort without demanding obedience or spiritual growth. This creates a false, diluted gospel.
3. Deepfakes and Manipulated Media
AI’s ability to create hyper-realistic images, videos, and audio (deepfakes) is a powerful tool for religious deception.
Forged Religious Content: AI can generate highly realistic videos of biblical events, which some critics argue reduces the Scripture to mere fantasy or action-movie entertainment, robbing it of its divine power and theological depth.
Mimicking Trusted Voices: AI can convincingly clone the voices and visual likenesses of respected pastors, theologians, or religious leaders to create video or audio messages that promote false doctrines or misinformation, leveraging the leader’s credibility to deceive their audience.
Guarding Against Deception
For Christians, the most effective defense against AI-driven deception is to exercise discernment and adhere to established spiritual practices:
Compare with the Source: Always compare any teaching or explanation, especially if generated by an AI, with the printed, trusted text of the Bible itself (2 Timothy 3:16).
Rely on Trusted Sources: Consult historically orthodox commentaries, study Bibles, and teachings from established, reputable church leaders who are known for sound doctrine.
Seek the Holy Spirit: Christian teaching emphasizes relying on the Holy Spirit for discernment and understanding of Scripture, a faculty that AI entirely lacks (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Verify Information: Do not accept AI-generated claims at face value. Verify all information, especially on doctrine, through multiple trusted sources.
